Poland's Flag Proudly Raised at San Francisco City Hall

In honor of the 228th anniversary of Poland's Constitution Day, and the 10th anniversary of the Krakow-San Francisco Sister Cities relationship, an official ceremony took place at San Francisco's City Hall on Friday, May 3. Chief of Protocol Charlotte Shultz welcomed Tad Taube, Honorary Consul of the Republic of Poland in the San Francisco Bay Area, who raised the red and white Polish flag from the Mayor's second-floor balcony to the applause of small crowd of invited guests. Once the flag was aloft, the assembled group joined in singing the Polish National Anthem. Ms. Shultz read from a proclamation signed by San Francisco Mayor London Breed declaring May 3, 2019 Polish-American Friendship and Heritage Day. Consul Taube, born in Krakow, and Shana Penn, Taube Philanthropies Executive Director, reminded us that the Polish Constitution, written in 1791, is recognized as Europe's first, and the world's second, modern codified national constitution. Among those present at the ceremony were Anita Friedman, CEO of Jewish Family and Children's Services; Caria Tomczykowska, President of the Polish Arts and Culture Foundation; Mary Kay Stuvland, Artistic Director and Choreographer for Łowiczanie, the Polish Folk Ensemble; and Rabbi Serena Eisenberg, Northern California Director of the AJC.
